BEAVERTON — The ball was pinging all over the park on April 21 when the No. 3 Valley Catholic Valiants (10-2, 5-1) and No. 6 Scappoose Indians (9-5, 2-4) staged an offense-heavy barnburner.
The lead changed hands a half-dozen times in the game. Valley Catholic took the last lead of the game, winning 9-8 on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Several different players came up with clutch hits to score runs in a game that featured four home runs and five doubles.
Scappoose took the first lead of the game, going up 1-0 in the first inning on an RBI single from sophomore Nicky Gill.
The Valiants got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run.
Sophomore JC Gross got the lead back for the Tribe in the top of the fourth. After three straight walks loaded the bases with two outs, Gross ripped a two-run single to right field.
The Valiants answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame, keyed by a grand slam.
The Indians got all five of those runs back in the top of the fifth, thanks to a pair of home runs. Sophomore Carson Witt sent a three-run shot to center field. With two outs in the inning, junior Hunter Holmason sent a two-run homer to center, putting the Indians up 8-7.
Neither team managed a run in the sixth inning. Holmason doubled with one out in the seventh. He eventually got to third base, but never any farther.
The Valiants were able to push two runs across in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
Holmason finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Gross was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Gill ended up 2-for-4 as well.
Scappoose had a game scheduled against Newport (5-11, 2-4) on April 23, but it was rained out. The Indians will play on the road against the Tillamook Cheesemakers (3-13, 1-5) at 5 p.m. on April 26.
